Ciao 👋
challenges are good
you’ve gotta have a goal
something to motivate you and push you forward
that’s something Duolingo ((kinda)) gets right with its monthly challenge badges
They don’t mean much in the grand scheme of things
but yanno — it’s something extra
a nice little bonus to sweeten the pot
thing is, we all know Duolingo has a tendency to go too far sometimes... and not explain the changes they're making
and, true to form, this month they've gone and done it again... 😂
new month, new challenge
You know the drill by now
Every month Duolingo rolls out a new monthly goal
the goals are usually the same — complete X among of quests to unlock the month’s badge
each month the challenge takes on some different theme
this month it’s called Lucy’s Aquatic Adventure...
doesn’t really mean anything, nor does the badge
complete all the required quests, and your special badge will get added to your collection, gathering digital dust away from public view
cool.
so what’s so special about this month’s? 🤔
well, Duolingo has decided to up the requirements for some users
For a while the highest requirement was 50 quests
usually reserved for the most hardcore users
this month, however, they’ve gone a giant step further...
now some users are expected to complete 100 quests before the month is out...
100!
it’s a tall order… for exactly the same reward as before
me? I’ve still got my usual 50 this month, probably because I only just manage to scrape that every month ((I left it until the last day last month!))
and then there are others that have even less than that!
but wait...
unbeknownst to a lot of users ((thanks to Duolingo not really explaining the change 🙄)) the new requirements are actually part of a new challenge system
for users that have the 100 requirement, they're now on this new system.
for them, each daily quest has a different points value:
- the first quest is worth one point
- the second is worth two points
- the third is worth three points
- and the friends quest is now worth 10 points instead of 5
so when you think about it, the requirements are still kinda the same... it's just Duolingo has jumbled everything up a bit
as you can imagine, it's caused a lot of confusion in the Duolingo community:
if you haven't received the 100 requirement, then you're still ((probably)) on the old system, where each daily quest is worth a point and friends quests are worth 5.
what do you think of the changes? 🤔
