Duolingo Decoded

Duolingo's got a new weekly quest... πŸ‘€

Ciao πŸ‘‹

teamwork really does make the dream work πŸ’ͺ

that's the ethos of the weekly friends quest, where you work together with one of your Duolingo buddies to achieve some random goal 🎯

for doing so, you both unlock a bunch of gems, a 30-minute XP Boost, and receive a cool 5 quest points towards your monthly quest goal

it's proven to be a pretty popular mode

...which is why Duolingo recently decided to build on it, launching a brand new co-operative quest type specifically for family plan subscribers... πŸ‘€

so what's the new quest?

the new quest type is called Family Quest πŸ§‘β€πŸ§‘β€πŸ§’β€πŸ§’

rather than just doing a quest with one of your Duolingo friends, you instead complete one with your family plan members

this means you can have as many as 6 users working towards one goal 😯

you might think this makes it a whole lot easier... but nah

Duolingo actually makes the quest harder -- meaning you all have to pull your weight

for example:

the other day, I was part of a family quest with my two family plan buddies

rather than the usual 50 or so lessons to complete, we had to complete 105...

beyond this, it worked exactly the same as the usual friends quest:

  • 4 days to complete
  • could sent nudges and gifts
  • every completed lesson went towards the total

as you can see, we all worked equally as hard...

in fairness, I was on holiday, and the wifi was absolutely appalling, so my one lesson was a good hustle as far as I'm concerned 😏

the rewards were exactly the same as the friends quest as well, so the only difference is the number of participants

wait - does this mean no more friends quest for family plan-ers? 😳

i did wonder this when i first saw the family quest

but no -- this week I was back into an ordinary friends quest πŸ€œπŸ€›

so it looks like Duolingo will cycle between friends and family to keep things fresh

there doesn't appear to be any way of choosing -- it's just random at the moment

the only requirement for the family quest is that you're a member of a family plan. after that, Duolingo takes care of the rest

how to get started

there's nothing you have to do to start a family quest πŸ™…

so long as you're on a family plan it'll just happen automatically at some point

from what I can tell it's currently in a/b testing at the moment, so don't worry if you haven't received it yet, it'll pop up eventually

happy questing!

Ciao for now,

-Matt
